L’Arc de Triomphe

Today, our ridiculously long walk around Paris comes to its conclusion at the Arc de Triomphe…  Here’s the last of the pictures from our little stroll.

Another contingent of riot cops...

There it is... Napoleon would be proud.

As weird as this might sound, it was almost memorizing to stand there and stare at the traffic... The 'roundabout' is probably 6 or 8 lanes wide, with no lane markings, and there's probably 10 or 12 entrances and exits. It was nuts.

Some random pretty building across the street.

And with that we made the long hike back to the hotel…  It was a long day, I figure we walked about 16 miles, give or take, and holy shit I was sore by the time we made it home…  But it was an incredible experience, and thanks for coming along.

Also, I’ve just been informed that I’ll be spending next week in the New Mexico and Arizona desert, working first in Holbrook, AZ (pop. 5,126), and then in Grants, NM (pop. 9,182). While that might not sound horribly exciting, it’ll be nice to get out of my cubicle, and I’m sure I’ll take a picture or two along the way….

An Evening at La Tour Eiffel

For today’s post, I’m going to try something new…  Rather than inserting all the pictures into the post itself, I’m trying a little photo gallery.  So click on any of the thumbnails down there, and you can scroll through the pictures to your heart’s content.  If you want to see the full-sized image while you’re scrolling through the gallery, click on the “Permalink” button under the picture.  Word.

While I think this is a better way to showcase the pictures, it means you won’t be privy to my incredibly witty and oh-so-charming captions.  However, I don’t think you’ll miss them too much on this post.  There’s a crapload of pictures of the Eiffel Tower, a picture of Lotta, the full moon, a dude selling some paintings, and there’s a bridge over the Seine in there somewhere too.

In one of those random happenings that one couldn’t plan even if one really wanted to, there was a free concert just across the Seine from the tower; that was pretty cool.  It’s not every day you get to see a show in the shadow of one of the most famous monuments on the planet, so there’s a picture or two of that in there as well.

That’s enough chit-chat, click on the thumbnails and get to the pictures.

I hope you liked the pictures, and I certainly welcome any feedback on the gallery…  Is it better?  Worse?  You don’t really care?  Lemme know…

So long from Boulder, CO.

Les Invalides and the Église du Dôme

After moseying through the gardens, we continued on towards Les Invalides, and the very impressive Église du Dôme.  According to that there Wikipedia article, the dome itself was the inspiration for the dome on the White House, as well as several other prominent structures…  It was pretty easy to see why…

Some random church at sunset... Love this picture...

And here we are at the dome.

This place was really pretty. Places like this were almost more impressive to me than some of the more well-known tourist attractions. I guess I was just surprised at how many breathtaking structures and beautiful sights we saw that I'd never heard of... I mean, I'd never heard of the Église du Dôme before this trip... Maybe it's just me though.

Ah yes, a segway tour. You'll never guess what language the tour guide spoke...

And with that, we’re off to the Eiffel Tour.  Seriously, come back tomorrow, the pictures are pretty amazing…
