A Saturday in Speyer – Yachting on the Rhine

This weekend Ms. Müller and her crazy family were kind enough to take me along on their family outing to Speyer.  If you’ve never heard of it, you’re not alone; I hadn’t either until a few days ago.  It’s a little town on the Rhine of around 50,000 people not too far from Frankfurt.  On Friday night, we all piled in the car and drove a couple of hours south to our hotel room.  We had dinner that night, and headed out in the morning to take a little boat trip on the Rhine.

I had absolutely no idea what to expect.  Whenever Ms. Müller, or anyone else in Germany for that matter, invites me to go somewhere, my initial reaction is gratitude, soon followed by: ‘I wonder what the fuck that is.’  I’ve spent some time out here for sure, but in the scheme of things, it hasn’t been nearly long enough for me to have informed opinions about much of anything.  Also, stuff in Germany has profoundly German names.  Like, all of it.  So getting invited to Schwandorf, Speyer, or Stuttgart all sound pretty similar, and I know a similar amount about each of them: not much.  In reality, that’s sort of like getting invited to Dodge City, Kansas, Fort Collins, Colorado, or Chicago, Illinois, so as far as I was concerned, a little trip to Speyer could have meant anything.

But I did know that Ms. Müller would be there, and her family too, and strangely enough, I’ve taken a liking to these crazy krauts.  It’s not like I had anything better to do, so I tagged along and it turned out to be a pretty good time.  I’m glad they were kind enough to bring me along.  As happens with some regularity out here, I spent a moment or two in disbelief.  5 years ago as I delivered pizza and finished up my English degree at CU, I never thought I’d end up on the deck of a boat motoring around the Rhine…

Anywho, here’s some pictures from our first stop, an hour boat trip around the Rhine:

That’s all for now, more from Speyer and this here little boat trip coming before long.

Don’t be a stranger.

A Lazy Day in Dusseldorf – Part 2

Our rather un-energetic, if not aesthetically pleasing, stroll along the Rhine and through the heart of Dusseldorf continues…

The day was so lazy, in fact, that we laid here in the grass… We both fell asleep for probably an hour or so…

The view before we did…

Another picture of another city reflected in Ms. Müller’s sunglasses…

It’s just dripping with irony…

I’m not sure why, but wedding parties love Dusseldorf… Both bachelor and bachelorette parties abound, and they all make matching t-shirts…

Trash can knows how to get down…

A bachelorette party.

Ah yes, Occupy Dusseldorf…

Chimp says action, damnit…

Not to nitpick your spelling, but…  Bit of a stretch isn’t it?

And with that, let’s go home.

Hope you enjoyed our little stroll…  Some pictures of Donk the Clown, a Dusseldorf street performer, coming next time I get the chance to grace you with a post…

A Lazy Day in Dusseldorf

This weekend, fate, and my boss, did me a solid, I had both Saturday and Sunday off of work.  Two whole days spent hanging out completely sans-power plant in Germany.  On Saturday, Ms. Müller and I took off to spend a few hours in Dusseldorf.  The little area in which I spend the vast majority of my time out here is right between Dusseldorf and Cologne.  I’ve been to Cologne a bunch of times, but I’d only been to Dussledorf once, and I’ll be honest, I had a fair amount to drink that night, so I’m not really sure if it even counted…

So we drove from Bergheim to Grevenbroich, and then took the train into the city.  There we spent a few hours walking around, getting some food, strolling along the Rhine, and I did my best to wear out Ms. Müller’s patience by stopping every two seconds to take pictures.  If you feel so compelled, come along on our little stroll.

Switching trains in Neuss.

The monster train station in Dusseldorf…

Best.

Jogger.

Ever. Some of my friends have astutely observed that this dude looks a shitload like Rod Stewart.

Like this. No clue what any of it is, I never, ever do.

The canals that run through town. Pretty stuff.

Artsy still-life crap.

Stereotypes are funny.

Dude on the right is actually one of the friendlier Germans I’ve encountered.

Foreign languages can be pretty funny too.

This dude insisted that I take his picture. So I did. Then I published it.  Joke’s on him.

We stopped here and got some falafel…

Don’t think this guy’s going anywhere for a while.

The stoop where all the cool kids hang out…

It’s a stoop with a view…

And coal barges on the Rhine. Pretty good chance I’ve worked on the boiler for which this is destined.

That’s all for this evening.  The rest of our day in Dusseldorf will be coming soon…
