And We’re Back.

It’s been damn near a month since I’ve graced you all with a new post…  And what a ridiculously tiring and busy month it’s been.  The day I left you I was bound for a 10-day stint here:

Gonzales, Louisiana.

To work here:

A hydrogen production facility

Installing these:

48 stems, on which we’ll later install 48 lasery-measurey-thingies.

It was a tough little trip.  This is our first foray into this market, and it’s quite a cutthroat market at that.  We have a fair amount riding on it.  So everything had to be done quickly.  And everything had to be perfect.  We put in 8 12-hour days in a row in all the heat and humidity the deep south had to offer.  But when all was said and done, this phase of the project got done on time, and as a company man, it was a good first step in the right direction.

From there I traveled home, and without so much as a day off I started preparations for my next trip: a 1500 km German tour of 7 systems what will certainly prove to be a quite thorough, month-long ass-kicking.

The route for my little road trip…

The list of shit I have to do while I’m out here is damn near two pages long.  And the shipment of crap I’ll need to do it all weighed better than 200 pounds.  It’s going to be a long trip; my longest stint out of the country yet.  And a shitload of work.  But it’s not all bad.  At least I’m not in the deep south any more…  They do talk funny out here, but at least no one sounds like Foghorn Leghorn.  And the beer is substantially better.  And more importantly, the lovely Ms. Müller is currently pouring the beers for me.

I arrived in Frankfurt one week from today, and the festivities are well underway.  After a weekend in the red light district in Frankfurt (fret not, I’ll tell you all about it), and a brief stint in Bavaria, I’m back at the Best Bar in Bergheim, which might as well be my Cheers.  So that’s nice.  It’s going to be a trip for the books, So please excuse my prolonged absence, and come join me on my German road trip.

A Sleepy Sunday in Schwandorf

So for the last few days, and the next couple to come, I’m marooned in Schwandorf, Germany.  It’s just down the road from Schwarzenfeld, and it’s a little bit bigger, but it’s equally as quiet.  Apparently, there’s not much to do around here (thanks to my buddy Colin for that link).

So I addressed my rather frustrating Sunday off (I’d rather work so I can get the hell out of here, but that wasn’t an option) by heading to the gas station for a few backpack beers, throwing on the headphones, grabbing the camera, and heading out for a stroll…  Nothing new there, but it was a pretty little village.  I’m sure seeing the pictures second hand will be a lot more entertaining than having to spend a week or two here, and I’m glad to take that hit for you.

And the stroll starts... Right across the street from the Hotel Waldlust.

I guess this is a concert venue, cut right into the hill there. I could go see Nazareth, some presumably shitty German metal band.

Getting towards 'downtown.'

Swans, pretty.

Ah yes, the local NFL pro shop. Looks like business is booming.

This is just weird. I mean what are the odds that they would have two rivers with the exact same name like 8 miles from one another? That just seems like poor planning to me.

The little town is as picturesque as it is dull.

Well, I know what that bottom one means.

Das Naab.

There it is... Schwandorf should buy this shit from me and put it in their travel brochure. Ok, Schwandorf should totally start a travel brochure, and then buy this shit from me and put it in their travel brochure.

A big water wheel, mill thing they've got in a little park by the river.

Walking through town now... This dude found Das Boot, so they bronzed him. Or something. Pretty awesome little statue whatever it is.

Old man in an alley... I find the alleys in these towns captivating for some reason.

The delightfully Bavarian town square. Although they suck at geometry.

And, a little later... The "Bar Cafe" or whatever it's named, where I get my beers on around here.

The town trapezoid later that evening.

And finally, the long walk up the hill back to my slightly-above-bed-sized hotel room.

That’s all for this evening…  I have to get some rest so I can finish up and get out of this beautiful, boring little place.  I hope you enjoyed your vicarious Sunday afternoon in Schwandorf.

Just Another Night in Nuremberg

On this past Saturday, Glendo and I found ourselves with an evening to ourselves with a rare day off to follow.  We decided to take advantage of the few hours of tourist-time we were so graciously afforded by heading to Nuremberg to meet up with one of our German friends from travels past.

It was my second time visiting the city, but for whatever reason, it was prettier this time.  Perhaps it was the fact that it was a warm spring night, or the fact that I wasn’t operating on five or six hours of Ambien-induced airplane sleep.  Whatever the reason, I enjoyed it much more this time around.  We only spent an hour or two strolling through the old castle walls of the city center, but, it was an awfully photogenic little place, and for a photo-nerd like myself, it was a fantastic place to exercise my shutter finger…

The train station.

Who's up for some Frogger?

One of the many turrets that dot the city.

You would think that by now I'd know better than to leave my tripod in the car. But, I don't. We're a little crooked because the camera was just sitting on the handrail of the bridge, but I still like it...

Without a tripod a dude's gotta improvise. Set the camera down in the middle of the street. Kinda like the results though....

In case you forgot where we were...

And finally, the window of some random store. I don't think this could be any more German if it tried.

Welp, that’s all for this little visit to Nuremberg.  Pictures from a day-trip to Prague coming soon to a blog near you.  Once again, it’s beer-time and bed-time…

Gute Nacht aus Schwarzenfeld
